the Schopper-Riegler: an essential tool

By Noviprofibre | 13/05/2025

The Schopper-Riegler apparatus is an essential tool, a true pillar of the paper industry. It enables the precise determination of the drainability of a fibrous suspension, a crucial characteristic that directly influences the quality of the paper produced. The method is standardized by ISO 5267-1, thus ensuring uniformity and reliability of results on an international scale.

But what is drainability and why is it so important? The drainability of the pulp, that is, its ability to release water during the paper sheet formation process, is intimately linked to fundamental properties of the fibers that compose it. These properties include:

  • Specific surface area: the larger it is, the greater the interactions between the fibers and water.
  • Swelling: the ability of the fibers to absorb water and increase in volume.
  • Hydration capacity: the ease with which the fibers can retain water.

By measuring these parameters using the Schopper-Riegler apparatus, we can define a refining index, called the Schopper-Riegler (SR) index. This index provides us with valuable information on the behavior of the pulp during the paper manufacturing process, and in particular on its drainage speed, its retention of fines, and its mechanical strength. A high SR index generally indicates a more refined pulp, with a larger specific surface area and water retention capacity, which can positively influence the strength of the paper, but also its drainage speed.

Understanding and mastering the SR index is therefore essential to optimize the paper production process. It allows manufacturers to adjust the refining parameters in order to obtain a paper with optimal properties, meeting the specific requirements of each application.
